EASTERN SPADEFOOT Scaphiopus hurterii (Harlan, 1835)

      STATUS:  Uncommon

      LOCALITIES OBSERVED:  Dallas Co.:  Post Oak Road near Belt Line Road and Haymarket Road at St. Augustine Road;  Tarrant Co.:  Benbrook-Aledo Road, Meandering Road at Silver Creek Road, 4 miles north of Mansfield, White Settlement Road, Briarwood St. in Arlington, and the Euless area

      DOCUMENTED COUNTIES:  Dallas, Denton, Hood, Johnson, Kaufman, Parker, Tarrant, and Wise 

      HABITAT:  Trinity River Bottoms, Western Cross Timbers, Mesquite Grand Prairie, Blackland Prairie, Eastern Cross Timbers, and Post Oak Belt

      SUBSPECIES:  Hurter's Spadefoot (S. h. hurterii Strecker, 1910)

      COMMENTS:  Due to the dates of these observations, Hurter's spadefoot may no longer be at the above localities (Dial and Smith, 1964).  No recent records occur for this spadefoot in the Metroplex.  Dates of occurrence have ranged from March to May after heavy spring rains.
