Corn Snakes
Species
: Elaphi gutata gutata

The name corn snake is said come from this species habit of frequenting corn fields and cribs where there is an abundance of rodents, their primary food. It may also stem from the fact that their coloring closely resembles that of the "Indian" corn cultivated by the native peoples and early European settlers of the North American continent.

Juvenile and nesting females are often found in association with dead and rotting pines trees along the Atlantic seaboard however, most adults are found at ground level. Abandoned agricultural fields are favorite haunts as are mature pine forest.

Moderately sized and possessing a gentle nature, corn snakes are an excellent pet choice for beginners. Advanced keepers also appreciate the wide variety of color and pattern mutations available as well as the impressive coloration of many naturally occurring wild populations.
