Kara Glasgow
Blood Pythons
March 3, 2005

PHFlame: Good evening, everyone, and thank you for joining us tonight!

On behalf of Jeff Barringer and all of us at kingsnake.com, I'm very pleased to welcome Kara Glasgow to our Seventh Annual Chat Week.

Kara Glasgow of NERD has been into snakes all her life, and a serious breeder for the last decade. "I was a boa snob until I saw the light with bloods," she says, adding, "Still love my boas though." She is currently working with a selection of blood and short-tail color and pattern morphs, with more on the way. She's also about to launch a new website, bloodpythons.com. So it's no surprise that her topic tonight is blood pythons.

Thank you so much for joining us, Kara, and welcome!

KLG: LOL! Thank YOU guys! I am very happy to be here!

cagecrafters: ?

Rich Crowley: ?

Thomas j: ?

cagecrafters: ?

DemoniEndin: ?

KLG: Ok one thing before we get started with the questions please!

KLG: I have to go on my mini-rant

KLG: are we good to go?

PHWyvern: kara...yes

KLG: Ok!

PHWyvern: if you have an opening statement of your own...go for it

KLG: As many of you know, Tracy Barker from VPI has been the biggest influence on my blood python addiction.

survey33: ?

KLG: Last year Tracy was diagnosed with breast cancer, but caught it early with a mammogram & has made a wonderful recovery.

KLG: This is a disease we ALL need to be aware of

KLG: please take a moment to visit breastcancer.org

KLG: and learn what you can do to help fight it!

KLG: This would really mean a lot to me!!!!!!

palex134: brb in 2

PHGinger: You've got it Kara!!

PHFlame: good idea, kara.

KLG: And remind the women close to you to get a mammogram!!!!

tracy_nr: thanks klg that is cool

KLG: Thanks folks - I feel VERY strongly about this!

KLG: OK!

KLG: Let's talk some bloods!

PHFlame: ready, kara?

KLG: And short-tails.

KLG: Let's roll!

PHFlame: Taylor, you're first

Taylor: how long have you been breeding bloods?

KLG: Actively for about the past 4 years, they've become my main focus in the past 2.

Taylor: o cool

KLG: They're all I think about morning noon & night.

Crazycodykadunk: ?

Michael Pennell: ?

KLG: Quick shout out to JeffB...my fellow TX'n and awesome webguy!

PHFlame: krn, you're up

krn: do you think blood pyhons will be as popular as ball pythons, and what was your first herp i hope tracy gets better

KLG: Tracy is GOOD! That's why early mammograms are important!

bLackbEtta23: Does anyone happen to know anything about any cornsnakes..im having problems here with my 2 cornsnakes =\

KLG: I think bloods will be very popular in their own right!

KLG: No, they will never be a ball python, but in a lot of ways that's a good thing.

KLG: They're the "Big Snake" of the future.

krn: yes

KLG: Esp. with so many communities banning giant snakes

KLG: I think bloods & short-tails will help fill that niche.

KLG: GA

PHFlame: Palex, go for it

krn: thanks for your time

palex134: What is the smalles blood python or shortails sub species? i heard sumatran blacks? Is this true? If so how big do they get?

morliaman: ?

KLG: Sumatran short-tails are generally considered to be the smallest...although we have a 5' female.

KLG: Big Sumatran blacks are impressive!

palex134: thanks kara

KLG: Sure! GA

PHFlame: herper 789, go

herper789_nr: How many eggs do sumatran short tails lay per season?

herper789_nr: Thanks Kara

KLG: Let's just say they're capable of laying a LOT!

herper789_nr: thanks

KLG: We had one lay close to 30 last year

KLG: and they were ALL BAD!

KLG: Don't make your bloods too fat!

palex134: ?

KLG: h789 - I'm not sure what exact record for the species is.

kareo: ?

KLG: But they have lots of potential!

KLG: GA

PHFlame: cagecrafters, you're up

cagecrafters: Hi K~ , whats in the future for blood morphs?

KLG: The future is BREIT!

KLG: As in breitensteini, brongersmai & curtus

KLG: There is a LOT we have yet to see with bloods & STP's!

KLG: Tracy @ VPI is working on some KILLER morphs...

jordanm: ?

KLG: few tricks up my sleeves

KLG: it will be FUN!

KLG: These are going to be the next big thing IMO.

cagecrafters: I cant wait )

KLG: GA

KLG: Me neither Sam!

neilgolli:
?

PHFlame: Rich Crowley, are you still here? you're next

KLG: GA

KLG: Dude...if he left he is SO dead. ;)

KLG: J/K

KLG: I love Rich...he is a rock star!

PHFlame: Rich, second call

KLG: Does a lot w/his herp society in IL!

KLG: Get involved with your local herp society!

KLG: Ga

PHWyvern: I think Rich dropped out of the room

PHFlame: We can come back to Rich if he shows back up.

KLG: I'll kick his butt next time I see him. ;)

PHFlame: ThomasJ, you're up

Thomas j: Is cycling bloods the same as balls. What size cage for adults

KLG: Thomas - I start cooling my adults in Nov. & warm them back up late feb-March.

KLG: Adults, males minimum 3' x 18"

KLG: Girls min. 4' x 24"

herper789_nr: ?

Thomas j: Thank you

KLG: I like to give them as much room as they want.

KLG: They're good at telling you if you let them.

KLG: GA

KLG: Oh!

Herp.Haven: ?

PHFlame: Palex, you're up again

KLG: Height is not AS important - I do all freedom breeder racks & the drawers aren't that tall!

palex134: what is the best secies for a blood beginner

palex134: i have snake experience just not bloods

palex134: many pythons tho

KLG: Palex - Borneos are a good start, Sumatran short-tails are great too...

palex134: thanks

palex134: only CB

KLG: Brongersmai ("bloods") can be a bit more feisty as babies...any of them can...

KLG: make sure you get from a good CBB source.

KLG: But Borneos or Sumatran short-tails are a good start!

palex134: ok thanks

KLG: GA

PHFlame: herper789, go ahead

KLG: No problem!

herper789_nr: What is the minimum size cage for male and female SST's?

KLG: Herper - I use the large freedom breeder 3-across racks for my males. Males dont need to be HUGE.

cagecrafters: ?

palex134: ?

KLG: The girls get 4' drawers.

KLG: http://www.freedombreeder.com - all the sizes are there if you want to get super exact.

herper789_nr: ok thanks

KLG: Otherwise, 4x2x??? for girls, and 3x18x??? (height) for boys

KLG: cage height isn't as important in racks

PHFlame: demoniEndin, you're up

KLG: Animal plastics T10 cages are GReAT!

DemoniEndin: what would you say the easiest and most successful way of mainting proper temperature and humidity is for Borneo STPs?

KLG: I keep it SIMPLE!

KLG: is 60%

KLG: humidity 60%

KLG: chat is eating my words

KLG: Temps are with heat tape & thermostats

KLG: check with a Ray-tek gun.

bpmachine: ?

DemoniEndin: makes sense.. thanks

KLG: Creating the right environment for a blood is not rocket science - they can be kept like Burms or retics. They don't need to be sopping wet.

KLG: Temps are very straightforward.

KLG: I use Ranco & Helix thermostats & check them every couple of days or so with a Raytek gun

KLG: GA

PHFlame: survey33, go for it

survey33: I don't keep Bloods but have been thinking about those killer Albino bloods. What type of Blood are they a morph of? How about the stripes? Thanks.

JLExotics: ?

KLG: The albinos you've seen are a Tyrosinase-positive - aka T+ - red blood - Python brongersmai.

KLG: They are some of the reddest reds going!

KLG: There is an albino Borneo in England

KLG: Stripes - VPI has some wicked cool Borneo super stripes,

KLG: And several folks are doing genetic striped red bloods - brongersmai.

KLG: GA

PHFlame: Crazycodykadunk. gp

Crazycodykadunk: Hey Kara whats going on? my little blood i got last week has bin very odd. i no each is an individual and have there own personality but she is super friendly to me. i can open her cage take her out and she is super fiendly but if its anyone else she will hiss puff up and bite! have u ever noticed this before in bloods or is mine just a brat that loves me and no one else? Kara Your a blood goddess!!!

KLG: LOL Cody!

KLG: I think snakes are as individual as people - they can also pick up on when folks are nervous.

KLG: As we say around here " if you act like you're going to get bit, you're going to get bit!"

KLG: Maybe that's what your snake is picking up on with other folks?

KLG: Most of my bloods are EXTREMELY!!!!! DOCILE!!!!!!

KLG: GA

PHFlame: CJinNH, go aheaad

CJinNH: Kara, first I want to say thank you for bringing my wife, kids and I, on a little tour behinds the scenes, the kids really love you. now my question, what is the differance between a short tail python and a blood python, besides color? Also, besides Ivories what morphs are "you" ready to see in bloods? oh and if you need to "store" any bloods at my house.........LOL

KLG: Whew! ok

palex134: ?

KLG: First off, you're very welcome!

KLG: IT's great to see a fam. so involved in herps!

KLG: Second - besides the obvious, color...I'd recommend reading the systematic paper published by Dave Barker et al that describes the 3 species - if you want it i have a copy.

KLG: Gets in to scalation, locality, etc.

KLG: Morphs - I would LOVE to see a chrome headed sumatran (black) short-tail that is patternless except for a silver pinstripe down the back. That woudl be SO cool.

herper789_nr: ?

KLG: And I think I'm good on space here for all my critters...but I'll holler if that changes!

KLG: GA

CJinNH: thanks

PHFlame: Mali, it's finally your turn!

KLG: Anything for you Cj!

Maliyum: How old were you when you started to like reptiles and keep them, what was your first reptile & ever keep any lizards? Oh and is it hard breeding?

KLG: BA

KLG: Mali - I was 10 when I caught my first snake,
davel: ?

KLG: and ever since then it's been GAME OVER!

KLG: Got into this seriously about 10 years ago...and it became a big passion.

Maliyum: tha'ts really neat

KLG: Lizards - we have a LOT of lizards here @ NERD

Maliyum: bearded dragons? my fav hehe

KLG: my favorites are the Rhino Iguanas. They are my mini dino-doggies.

KLG: Breeding dificulties vary from species to species.

KLG: GA

Maliyum: I know their awesome, hopefully when i get a bigger house i can keep one

PHFlame: Michael Pennell, want to go next?

Michael Pennell: I was told that if you wanted really red red blood adults, that you had to start with dull babies because the bright red babies would dull as they get older and vice versa. Is there any truth in that? Also, what different Borneo morphs are you working with?

KLG: Michael - baby bloods are variable...

KLG: I think choosing babies from the reddest parents is a no brainer, but there can be some swans from ugly ducklings, too! That is why I raise up so many every year - to see if there are patterns i can follow on the screamers.

Michael Pennell: Cool!

KLG: Borneos - I have stripes, my weird wannabee patternless ghost-y things, granites, marbles, and some "uber sexy" normals.

KLG: GA

PHFlame: morliaman, you're up

morliaman: what made you get heavily into bloods and less into boas? was price a motivating factor?

KLG: I don't work with ANY snakes due to price.

rowotter: ?

morliaman: as i know kevin is in to high end

KLG: Tracy Barker showed me a red-albino blood and it made me burst into tears.

KLG: It was the most beautiful snake I'd ever seen.

Karen_nr: ?

KLG: Stick a fork in me - I was DONE!

morliaman: better than aretic?????????

KLG: From then on I was hooked.

KLG: Yes, I like bloods better than retics.

KLG: And I have retics.

radwigs: ?

KLG: Love them.

KLG: I do love my boas,

KLG: I had a real heartbreaking experience with my best Surinam red-tails.

KLG: Lost my best pair within a year of each other and it just killed me.

KLG: I will always love boas, but I just can't "go there" right now.
GA

PHFlame: Kareo, you get to go next

KLG: P.S.

kareo: Thanks for coming to chat with us Kara. I'd like to know what is the weight and circumference of your biggest Blood?

KLG: Dollar signs are nothing at the end of the day if you truly love what you do.

KLG: Kareo - we have a big male that is 5' 8"

KLG: Circumference I don't know, but he is DIESEL!!!!!

kareo: cool ty

KLG: I couldn't believe he was a he at first!

KLG: GA

CJDiva: ?

herper678_nr: ?

davel2_nr:
?

palex134: ?

PHFlame: neilgolli, go for it

neilgolli: how do you feel bloods will do in popularity compared to balls do you think the market will ever be 1/4 of that of balls do to the size difference? Also due to larger litters, will prices fall rather quickly? Albino prices in 3 years?

KLG: Neil - I dont' like to compare bloods to balls - they are apples & oranges. Bloods are going to be the next big snake...I think that prices will fluctuate a bit over the next year or so & then stabilize. I will say THIS!

KLG: I don't agree with dumping a market for whatever reason

KLG: and there are folks doing that lately.

neilgolli: dumping a market?

palex134: ?

KLG: These snakes are very much investment quality

herper678_nr: ?

KLG: and I think once people get past being afraid of blood's long-held nasty WC reputation, they'll learn how AWESOME these snakes really are.

SAHARA_nr: THERES SOMTIN WRONG WIT MY COMPUTER

neilgolli: VT and I think they will replace alot of burm and retic keepers JMHO

KLG: Most CBB bloods are very docile - truly choice, wonderful animals to work with. They're a good snake for the thinking herper!

KLG: GA

PHFlame: Herp.Haven, you're up

KLG: Not necessarily replace, but def. branch out!

SAHARA_nr: wat the hecc is going on

Herp.Haven: What would you consider the most challenging aspect of maintaining and/or breeding the blood pythons

KLG: That's just it - I dont' think bloods are exceptionally challenging

KLG: Which is one thing that is so great about them.

KLG: Right now the biggest challenge is getting other people to realize how awesome they are.

KLG: ALSO!

herper678_nr: ?

KLG: Making them fat is too easy to do! Here is a very "fuel efficient" snake that loves to eat - I've had to learn to scale back on feeding & keep them robust but not blobby.

KLG: Blobby is a great way to get bad eggs!

KLG: A

KLG: GA, even

herper678_nr: ?

PHFlame: cagecrafters, go ahead again

cagecrafters: do bloods typically have shedding problems even with a higher relative humidity? And when is Bloodpythons.com gonna be up!!?

KLG: LOL - I knew that was coming!

cagecrafters: )

KLG: 'm hoping to be done with bp.com by April.

Herp.Haven: ?

cagecrafters: thank god

KLG: I've had a lot of responsibilites w/NERD that are my top priority.l

herper678_nr: ?

KLG: Humidity - I rarely get bad sheds...i mist my bloods when they clear up from being opaque, and even that is probably overkill.
thatpythonguy: wow, this is my first ever KS chat, and i don't know how y'all keep up

KLG: 60% humidity usually does fine.

KLG: GA

cagecrafters: Thanks K~

KLG: ;0

PHFlame: palex134, you're up?

ganfer_nr: ?

palex134: What is the sexual maturity of Bloods or shorttails? how many years or size? also are u gonna go to the Maine show in Portland in August? Also, hows the Axanthic Pastel BP? ahahah

herper678_nr: ?

KLG: TMB

KLG: Palex -

ilikesnakes7792: ?

KLG: 1. I breed males at 2, females at 3

SAHARA_nr: ?

KLG: We don't go to ME - Kev is not a big fan of doing additional shows.

palex134: Kara, years or feet?

KLG: And the axanthic pastel is SO GREAT! The axanthic BP is SOOOOO underrated as far as potential

KLG: Palex - years

palex134: I love when their born their colors

herper678_nr: ?

palex134: the black and white

SAHARA_nr: ?

palex134: thanks

palex134: kata

KLG: GA

palex134: kara*

PHFlame: bpmachine, you are next

bpmachine: How long until blood morphs are x with ball morphs. Thanks Jas.

palex134: bye

herper678_nr: What is your favorite morph or subspecies of the blood python? Also how much do SST's run for? For adults?

KLG: BP - I'm not that into the crosses..they look cool but that's about it, so I'm rprobably not the best person to ask.

PHFlame: okay, guys, we have too many questions on the Q. No more questions for tonight

bpmachine: ok thanks K

KLG: Mods - if there are a bunch of questions, I don't mind staying late...

KLG: just FYI. ;)

KLG: I think it's great we have so many blood folks in one place!

PHFlame: thanks, kara. that is nice of you!

PHFlame: as she leaves the room!

PHWyvern: lol

PHWyvern: either the computer dumped or she hit the wrong button
babyboy_nr: do u love kevin alot?

CJinNH: they puter problems occasionally over there

CJinNH: so I am told

PHFlame: Kara, I thought you were going to stay later, not leave early

Lokismommy: wb kara lol

PHWyvern: Our que for questions for Kara Glasgow is full. For those already in the que, please wait for your turn to be called upon to ask your question. People will be called on in order of the que line. Thank you.

PHFlame: kara, are you ready for the next question?

KLG_nr: OK!

KLG_nr: Now we know what THAT button does!

PHFlame: kara, are you ready for the next question, or do you have more for BP machine?

KLG_nr: Sorry about that!

KLG_nr: GA!

PHFlame: JLExotics, your turn

JLExotics2_nr: I saw on the classifieds a pair of albino bloods for $3500...why the sudden drop? Not to long ago they were up in the 5-6k range. Are the missing the demand or something? Also what is your take on the "clown stripe bloods"....Myself as well as most thing they are a joke as it's just a variable albino...you find them in normals all the time.

KLG_nr: JL - I think some people get impatient and forget what their animals are actually worth. This is a slow time of year for most folks.

KLG_nr: The clown stripes are really pretty - I'd like to know more about them.

JLExotics2_nr: Ben siegels has plenty of the $$$...

KLG_nr: Hang tight - prices shoudl stabilize on the albinos.

KLG_nr: GA

JordanM1_nr: ahh this room doesn't like me

PHFlame: davel, go ahead

KLG_nr: Sure JL!

JordanM1_nr: k

PHFlame: davel, second call

PHFlame: JordanM, go ahead

davel2_nr: Kara, aside from striped albinos, what other "designer" bloods do you think will come out in the next few years? And what is the best feeding regimen as to not get them blobby?

JordanM1_nr: Hey Kara! How do you see the prices of bloods/st's holding up with those of say :cringe: balls, with the usual large clutch sizes of bloods/sts

KLG_nr: Jordan....

JordanM1_nr: oops

Lokismommy: ?

KLG_nr: I think we'll see some new pattern AND color mutations...Ivories will be BIG!

KLG_nr: I think Super Stripe Borneos will be HUGE

KLG_nr: And probably some other cool things as well as they are proven. I am working on Tigers & Albino Tigers.

KLG_nr: Feeding -

KLG_nr: feed babies fairly frequently

KLG_nr: but adults get moderate meals every 10 days.

ganfer_nr: ?

KLG_nr: GA

PHWyvern: well... since our que keepers are trying to get back in... how about this Kara

Lokismommy: Is it true borneos stay smaller and have better temperments than blood because I really love the color of the bloods alot better. And what is the maximum weight and size for a blood?

Lokismommy: sorry

PHWyvern: think Kevin will let me product test one of his bumblebee BPs?

KLG_nr: LOL!!! He hasn't even let ME test one!

KLG_nr: So maybe next year?

JordanM1_nr: ahh mass chaos.. I was next?

PHWyvern: netsplit I think

KLG_nr: If we still have a lot of questions I'm happy to hang around - I cleared my schedule tonight for this.

PHWyvern: Jordan..you were next

PHFlame: jordan, retype

davel__nr: ?

JordanM1_nr: how do you see the prices of bloods holding up with those of say :cringe: balls with the usual large clutch sizes of bloods/sts?

KLG_nr: Jordan...I dont' know that you can necessarily compare the two exactly...

KLG_nr: there will be a lot more people into balls who are afraid of bloods & may never see the light.

KLG_nr: I think that blood prices will stabilize and be a very good investment over the next few years for those seeking an extreme high-end animal.

JordanM1_nr: i was thinking the comparism of clutch sizes

KLG_nr: THey are just SO cool.

JordanM1_nr: i know ;)

KLG_nr: Well, you can compare clutch sizes all day long

KLG_nr: BUT!

KLG_nr: there are a lot more people workign with balls than bloods

KLG_nr: so I think it all evens out in the wash.

KLG_nr: Supply & demand, you know?

KLG_nr: The demand will continue to grow - I see it more and more EVERY DAY.

JordanM1_nr: but then there will be more people dealing with them..

KLG_nr: And it's only a matter of time before folks start to see all the different blood mutations.

JordanM1_nr: ok sorry

KLG_nr: Eventually yes...

KLG_nr: But I think we're still far enough off to not grasp a soild, actual comparison between the two.

KLG_nr: There are SO many folks into balls.

KLG_nr: GA

PHFlame: rowotter, go ahead

rowotter_nr: Hi Kara-Do you feed youngsters with the same reserve as adults, or are you able to beef them up fairly quick? Do you have much success in the females breeding in consecutive years? Finally, which species do you think has a brighter future (at this point) in terms of the market?

JordanM1_nr: ?

KLG_nr: I feed babies more often than adults...

KLG_nr: I think that all 3 species have a great demand - I get almost equal requests for all 3.

KLG_nr: Nice Sumatran blacks can hold their own.

KLG_nr: I prefer not to breed my girls every single year

KLG_nr: OK Tra!!!

KLG_nr: xoxoxoxo

KLG_nr: Which is why I have sooooooo many friggin' bloods!

KLG_nr: To alternate years!

KLG_nr: At least that's what I tell Kevin.

KLG_nr: Yeah!

PHWyvern: nice excuse

KLG_nr: And the check is in the mail, and I'll respect you in the morning, too!

PHFlame: lol

KLG_nr: :D

rowotter_nr: Maybe I need more then... :) Thanks a bunch Kara! (this is B Ott)

KLG_nr: Hey...I can keep 140 that way!

KLG_nr: Hey B!!!!!!!!!

jeffb: ?

KLG_nr: GA

PHFlame: Karen, are you ready? go ahead

Karen_nr: I practially swooned when I saw pics of albino bloods on VPIs site so I understand why you like them. Do you keep any ATBs? And not reptile related but how are you coming along w/your PF lovebirds?

KLG_nr: ATBs - yes, we have several @ NERD - I'm not really into them...dig the Emmies more.

KLG_nr: Lovebirds are AWESOME!

KLG_nr: The Feek is on my shoulder and says TWEET!

Karen_nr: Wilma is helping me type.

Karen_nr: That's all folks.

KLG_nr: LOL!!! PFLB's are hte BEST!

KLG_nr: GA

PHFlame: radwigs, go ahead

PHFlame: radwigs, second call

PHFlame: CJDiva, you are up

CJDiva: Hey Kara, perhaps you can help me with my dilemma...my husband (CJinNH) wants to bring home a new snake every time he walks into NERD.....is there any chance that you can hire him to work there on weekends so that he won't feel so guilty spending so much time there??

KLG_nr: ROFLMAO!!!

KLG_nr: I would just suggest that you join him in his herp addicition -

cagecrafters: lol

SAHARA_nr: wat

CJDiva: uh-oh, he's behind me....giving me the evil eye....please help???

PHFlame: oops, lost kara again

SAHARA_nr: she left

KLG_nr: OOPS!

KLG_nr: I'm back!

SAHARA_nr: wat happened

KLG_nr: I hit the leave button instead of Send.

KLG_nr: DOH!

KLG_nr: Hey Jbudd!

ta2edskin: i was wondering do you keep any arg. b@w tegus

KLG_nr: IT is SO great so see so many friends here.

KLG_nr: That has been a great thing about bloods -all the fellow keepers that I've met!
jbudd: Hey!

KLG_nr: YEs - we have LOTS of tegus.

KLG_nr: GA

PHFlame: kara, ready for next question?

PHFlame: ganfer, you are next

KLG_nr: Sure!

ganfer_nr: where can i get a book that has everything i need to know about bloods from breeding to health issues

cagecrafters: no where (

KLG_nr: LOL! Not out there yet - bloodpythons.com shoudl be up by April and hopefully that will help!

KLG_nr: GA

davel__nr: python of the world II...hopfully soon

KLG_nr: Ditto that Davel!

ganfer_nr: ok ty

KLG_nr: GA

ta2edskin: i was wondering if you would know what is wrong with mine. Her mouth on the sides sticks out like the bottom of her mouth is bigger then the top so u can see her gums

KLG_nr: Is this a blood?

PHFlame: SAHARA, go ahead

SAHARA_nr: im 14 years old trying to get a bloods is that a good idea?

KLG_nr: well, it would depend on your herp experience - what else have you kept Sahara?

SAHARA_nr: im just wondering how big they get

ChaosCat: !

KLG_nr: between 4-6' average

SAHARA_nr: ive kept lots of snakes and i still hav them
