Jeff Ronne
Boas
March 5, 2005

PHFaust: On behalf of Jeff Barringer and all of us at kingsnake.com, I'm very pleased to welcome Jeff Ronne to the finale of our Seventh Annual Chat Week.

Known as "the Boaphile," Jeff has been breeding boas since 1986, and is the co-author of "The Boa Constrictor Manual."

Thank you so much for joining us, Jeff, and welcome!

Djinn: ?

krn: ?

boaphile: Please bear with me as I am not the fastest typist nor the most accurate. I will not have time to spell check everything so there will be plenty of typos and misspellings. I will be banging away at the keyboard as fast as I can without much regard for the accuracy of my typing.

boxturtle_nr: ?

Slither66Wales: ?

PHFaust: Krn your up

PHFaust: The Boaphile

krn: hello i was wondering what type of boa stays small and makes a good sociable pet

roxydementia: ?

boaphile: Hoog Island Boas maek great pets and stay small but you can certianlly keep a Colombian BOa small by not feeding it a lot.

PHLdyPayne: If you have a question for Jeff Ronne, our guest speaker tonight, please type a "?" into the room and wait till y ou are called to ask y our question. We ask that you do not private message our hosts or Jeff this evening. DO NOT OPENLY CHAT IN THE ROOM. Please have your qu estion pre-typed and hit enter when your name is called.

krn: ok thanks boa philw

drimes: ?

Crazycodykadunk: ?

PHFaust: Mali

Maliyum: How big was ur biggest boa? weight and length? When did you get started into liking reptiles?

boaphile: I have several that are around 10' and 70 lbs. Much bigger than I would like. Caught a garter snake at around 8 years of age. That started it.

boaphile: ga

Maliyum: cool thanks

Maliyum: almost weighs as mushc as me!

PHFaust: Boxturtle your turn

boxturtle_nr: have u ever kept turtles?

imridethelghtng: ?

boxturtle_nr: or know about them?

boaphile: Yes! We have a Red Foot and a Eastern Box turtle now. THey are very cool! I'd like to keep more.

boaphile: ga

PHFaust: Rocky

rockyballboa: hi jeff if iwas too start a boa breeding project what would i need too start, caging, racks etc.and do you know any good canadian boa breeders. What is youre favorite boa and morph,thanks-boas rule

Pastor777: ?

PHFaust: Please wait until after you ask your first question to put another ? in the room...

TopNotchBoas: ?

boaphile: As far as animals pick somehting you like. Caging? Boaphile Plastics of course. THe 421D cage is perfect. My favorite? Hard to pick only one...

JBrant: ?

boaphile: ga

boaphile: Sorry I will try to remember to do the ga thing.

PHFaust: no prob jeff

boaphile: ga stands for "go ahead" correct?

PHFaust: herpkeeper

Herp-Keeper: how many snakes have you had throughout your life?

rockyballboa: ?

PHFaust: yep!

boaphile: I am not sure. Something around 10 or 12 I think. GA

Herp-Keeper: awsome

PHFaust: Snakeking

davel: ?

CTHERPS: Hi Jeff if you breed a hypo het albino to a albino what odds if any will be sun glow?

Snakeking_nr: ?

PHFaust: snake its your question

boaphile: Around one in 4 I believe. Putting me on the spot.

boaphile: ga

Snakeking_nr: Thanks for coming and taking the time to answer my question Jeff. I've been eyeing your Monster Tail siblins for awhile :) Anyway, what got you started in boa keeping / breeding? Also, when are you going to be divulging your secret to ID'ing hets? [img id=em-5]

boaphile: I had a Burmese. It was really cool but too active for my taste. After I handled my first Boa I knew that was it. Hets? What secret? LOL

boaphile: Ga

Snakeking_nr: haha thanks Jeff :)

PHFaust: shogun

shogunatereptile: Hey! And Thanks for comming! I had fun building this last cage I made for my beardie (I posted it earlier, I'm not sure if you saw it or not.) Anyway, I'm ready to move onto another cage, and I'm wanting to build a rack this time. What are the best cheap and efficient ways to make breeding racks? What are the right materials? I've heard melamine, but I'm just not sure. These would be for breeding, and not exactly exhibiting purposes. I'm looking at leopard gecko size geckos. It'd be Leopard Geckos, Fat Tailed Geckos, and Viper Geckos. I would love to buy your Boaphiles, but I'm on a VERY tight budget, seeing as all my time goes into school.

tarantula_nr: ?

boaphile: Melamine is a good material that will last for year. Not like BOaphile Plastics that will last longer than I will but I would recomend Melamine.

boaphile: ga

boaphile: Last for years not year. ga

shogunatereptile: thanks!

PHFaust: Djinn your turn

shogunatereptile: ?

AstonPowders: ?

Djinn: Hi Jeff! Do you have any plans to add the albino gene into your scarlet hypo line?

jnemani: ?

boaphile: Sure do. Probably getting done this year. Maybe next. GA

PHFaust: Slither66

Slither66Wales: Hi Jeff, i like boas and pythons but want to know if a spotted or childrens python would be a better first python than say a ball/royal python.I have only kept lizards and colubrids,or is a tree boa better than B.c.c.

peterm: ?

Slither66Wales: thanks

boaphile: Either of those are a good choice. They certianly have a lot more personality than your typical Ball Python too. GA

PHGinger: ROXY you are next

roxydementia: what do you think the future holds for IBD research? i have had 2 suspec boas (did not know where to send them back then to be sure) but no one else in the collection was infected its been years. i now run an informal rescue and keep new ones out at least 6 months, but that limits me on space big time, any experiance or advice for me? (any interest in donating cages to a rescue LOL)
rzaology: ?

boaphile: It is a really long story... but I do not believe IBD exists. I need to write this up along with all my many many years of anecdotal evedence garnered from tons of people who had been told differently. I can't expalin it all now that is for sure. GA

PHFaust: OHHH Roxy, you stole my question! ;)

roxydementia: id love to read whatever you write, thanks!

PHFaust: Drimes your turn

drimes: Have you found that a conservative feeding schedule affects boa lifespan one way of the other?

boaphile: BOttom line though. Boas do get sick. I would look for what other sickness can be observed and treat that. GA

roxydementia: im a vet tech and do what i can...

Taylor: ?

purplesnake_nr: ?

boaphile: Sure as opposed to overfeeding. I was just marveling at my babies from this past year which are typically now around 24" long. My first litter of babies were all around 48" at this time almost 20 years ago now. They have all long since died. GA

PHFaust: Cody

Crazycodykadunk: Ever work with anacondas??? im a conda freek

boaphile: I had yellow Anacondas. Man can thos things poop! I had them poop on the ceiling in a 2' high cage! They are really cool animals though if you don't mind having to clean them almosnt every day. THey bit right through the bag too so watch out! GA

PHFaust: IMridethelightening

imridethelghtng: Hi Jeff, Thanks for being here...What was your most exciting boa project ever, and how long did it take you to get it off the ground, and see that your hard work was paying off?

boaphile: The Pearlescent is the most exciting one I have worked with so far.

boaphile: I am very anxious to breed Pearlescent Boa to Pearlescent Boa as we really are optimistic there will be a mind blowing "Super" version of this wild unpredictable morph. Makes me nervous thinking about it. Here are pictures of a couple of them below:

PHFaust: Pastor

Pastor777: I have bought a couple of 66% Het albino that came from you origanally, and the are supposed to have some type of genitic marker that shows them to be true hets, can you tell me about the marker and where it is located?GA

boaphile: Sorry. That is a little secret for now. GA

PHFaust: Top Notch

TopNotchBoas: Hi Jeff, What is your current opinion on the way the pastel trait in boas is working? Polygenic? Codominant?

boaphile: My opinion has not changed. Polygenic. GA

gmherps: ?

TopNotchBoas: ?

Snakeking_nr: ?

LeoGeoGuy: ?

purplesnake_nr: ?

PHFaust: Jbrandt

JBrant: Hi Jeff good to see you here. How are the scarlet hypos coming? Any for sale this year?

rzaology: What size should a boa be before you switch it to rabbits, and what do you think would hurt more, getting bit from a 20 ft burm, conda, or retic. Just curious about the last question.

boaphile: I like rats. I think they have more fat that rabbits. I will stick to rats. You can star any time you can get rabbits small enough though. GA

PHFaust: IN case you missed it in the confusion

JBrant: Hi Jeff good to see you here. How are the scarlet hypos coming? Any for sale this year?

boaphile: Too many cages and racks to build to take pictues of them. I have quite a few. watch for them in the coming weeks. GA

PHFaust: Davel your turn now

JBrant: Thanks Jeff. Mine is doing great. I'll be in touch. Little crazy in here.
crazynilemon_nr: hey all what r we talking about?

boaphile: Oops. I missed an earlier question that I sent an answer to an individual who didn't ask about it. Sorry about that. GA

PHFaust: Digby your turn

PHFaust: It is very important to have your question pretyped so we dont have to make Jeff wait....

Digby_Rigby_nr: hello do you work with any locale specific boas?

reptilefreak101: ?

Djinn: ?

boaphile: Absolutly. Peruvians. Bolivian amaralii, Brazilian amaralii, Hogg Island, Colombia Boas, Costa Rican Boas. I probalby missed something though... GA

PHFaust: tarantula your thtrn

tarantula_nr: How are sand boas to keep as pets? Are they easy, difficult or what? And are they found wildly in Iran?

Robert Baker: ?

boaphile: They are probalby found in IRan but I am not sure. THey are great animals I guess if you don't mind not seeing them every time you look in the cage. They love to stay under the sand. I really like them. I had one for some time once years agon. None for a long time though. GA

tarantula_nr: ok thank

PHFaust: Jnemai

jnemani: Any more work done on producing those show table displays I talked to you about at Tinley. In particular a way to put it in a container for transport. Like a suitcase. I'd like to get one this year, what's the turnaround time?

purplesnake_nr: jeff iam looking to buy a peruvian redtail boa and iwould like to know which gets to alarger size the columbian or the peruvian redtail?

boaphile: None yet. Too much to do with everything else really. I really want to work out a carrying case and everything but can't seem to build everything esle as fast as I would like to. We did make a few new stayle cages though: Here is a shamless plug!

boaphile: http://boaphileplastics.com/combo_cages/new_stack.jpg

boaphile: GA

jnemani: Thank you

PHFaust: Peterm

PHFaust: And jeff, thats what being a guest at chat week means... Shameless plugs... :)

Pastor777: ?

Randy T.: ?

Seven7_nr: "?"

PHFaust: OK Lets see GM still here?

boaphile: Another shamless plug while we wait for a question:

boaphile: I am also dying to breed a Motley Boa with "The Monster Tail". Not just a Monster Tail bloodline animal but the Monster Tail. Most of you have probably seen her. Here she was last time she was gravid with the Pearlescent babies: http://theboaphile.com/summary_2003/monstergravid.jpg
Here she was checking out those babies: http://theboaphile.com/summary_2003/monsterandbabies.jpg

boaphile: GA

LeoGeoGuy: What is the smallest boa? & how big does it get? I'm looking for a beginner boa that does not get too big & is easy to keep.

diablodragon: ?

boaphile: Hogg Island Boa if you want a persoanble handlable Boa. You can keep one under 4' feet easisly. GA

LeoGeoGuy: R they easy to breed?

boaphile: The easiest! GA

LeoGeoGuy: thanks

PHFaust: Reptilefreak

reptilefreak101: jeff what do you think the best boa is for a 15 yr old kid, and how many boas around do you have thanks

Djinn: ?

reptilefreak101: and what size boaphile can i keep it in

boaphile: A Colombian Boa and don't feed it every three days! ONce a Boa reaches around 3'. A moderate item every two weeks is plenty! GA

boaphile: 421D for life GA

PHFaust: Snakeking

reptilefreak101: thanks

Snakeking_nr: What factors do you look at when pricing an animal? When are you going to start updating your website for everyone to buy tons of boas? [img id=em-3]

boaduuuude_nr: lol

boaphile: That is so long as you don't feed it like crazy! GA

boaphile: Pricing... more

boaphile: PRicing is really a factor of how much I like the animal and what I think the fair market value should be for that animal. I really need to update the site. I don't have any room right now for the babies that are coming soon... GA

PHFaust: If you have already asked a question and are still on queue, we will move you to end, and if we have time we will fit you in.....

Snakeking_nr: ok thanks Jeff :)

PHFaust: Queue is closed

boaphile: Another shamless short plug:

boaphile: Another important project we have in the works is Anerythristic Boas like this one!: http://www.theboaforum.com/forumpics/whiteanery.jpg

boaphile: GA

PHFaust: Shogun your up now that you are back

shogunatereptile: What is the best way to heat? I've always heard flexwatt... but there are so many new things out all the time... For racks, that is

DaveyFig: ?

boaphile: I use Flexwatt. It is tried and true. So long as you use it properly, which is detailed on the cage site, www.boaphileplastics.com it is safe and will alst for many many years. GA

shogunatereptile: thank ya thank ya!

PHFaust: Top notch your turn

TopNotchBoas: Do EBV Red Group Boas share genetic lineage to any of your lines of pastels? If so how did EBV end up with that line?

boaphile: Yes. The Lucy bloodline is where the original EBV animals came from. GA

boaphile: THe owner of EBV bought them from me. GA

boaphile: Ron Huffaker at the time. GA

boaphile: ANother plug quick!

boaphile: The most exciting thing I have ever seen Boa wise I must admit I think is the "Pink Patternless" Boa! Those are absolutely mind blowing. I hope to have some of those sometime before I die. That's all. Just sometime before I cash in my chips. Then it will have been all worth it.

http://www.theboaforum.com/forumpics/wow-man.JPG

A "hand full" of babies shown in this photo:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v203/diablodragon/pinkboababys007.jpg

boaphile: GA

PHFaust: Seven its your question

Seven_nr: Whats your opinion on the harlequin?

boaphile: Nice animals. GA

PHFaust: Diablo your turn

diablodragon: hello, have you ever had amazon tree boas and do you know how big a female has to be to breed?

boaphile: Hello Diablo! I have not. I am afraid I am a loss on those baibes. Beautiful though! GA

PHFaust: Randy T

Randy T.: do you have any Ivory litters cooking? And also Pastel albinos? If so what is the tentative due dates

boaphile: No dates yet Randy. I have high hopes for both this year but it is too early to tell for sure. Keep your fingers crossed for me OK? THanks! GA

Randy T.: no prob.. good luck

PHFaust: Rocky your turn

boaphile: The breeding i am most excited about this year?

boaphile: I am really hoping to get a few babies from this girl this year:

http://www.theboaforum.com/forumpics/monstertailclose7web.jpg

She is being bred by one of the pinkest Pastel Males I have. I have my fingers crossed and he is working like a mad man! Time will tell... GA

boaphile: Rocky are you in the house?

PHFaust: Skipping rockyballboa and going on to shogun

PHFaust: Shogun going twice......

shogunatereptile: Thanks! What would be the best method of keeping the animals in the rack?

shogunatereptile: Be it plastic containers with lids, or with out?

shogunatereptile: I'm wanting the best stress free environment

TopNotchBoas: ?

boaphile: Keep your drawers shut at all times. LOL. Lids would be best but a good rack will have close enough tolerances to keep your animals in check. GA

PHFaust: Djiin

shogunatereptile: Thanks!

Djinn: Jeff, do you allow people to come to your facility to buy? How about if their carrying lots of cash!?!

boaphile: Very seldom I am afriad. Too much work and I love to show everything off. Before I know it the whole day is gone and I have talked your ear off and I haven't gotten anything done. Best I just show you on the web. GA

PHFaust: Pastor your turn

Pastor777: Hi Jeff: What do you see as the future for the Albino? Do you think it will be able to hold its own with the addition of all the new morphs? Will they be a part of ongoing projects?

boaphile: Sure it is a strong market. The ALbinos people what most have something more. Like the PAstel ALbinos. More color makes more beautiful and more interesting. We are not close to the end of the Albino Boa market to be sure. GA

PHFaust: Top notch you will have final question for the evening....

TopNotchBoas: Do you still have full confidence that methods of breeding boas without any type of cooling gives the highest success rate?

boaphile: Absolutely! After trying a little expreimenting myself this year to make sure, I am more sure than every. I will suffer this year will far fewer babies myself as a result of trying a little cooling. This is the first I have told anyone about this. I guess everyone knows now huh? Oh well. DON'T COOL! Night time temerature drop yes. Cooling NO! THanks Jeff
devilgofer: thanks jeff im a big fan!
