PHFaust: On behalf of Jeff Barringer and all of us at kingsnake.com, I'm very pleased to welcome Kevin Mc Curley, Brian Potter, and Brian Barczyk to our Ninth Annual Chat Week.

Kevin McCurley has been a herp enthusiast since early childhood. His breeding efforts initially focused on Pituophis and other large colubrids, and over the course of time the collection grew along with an interest in pythons, particularly those with which fewer keepers were working at the time namely retics and ball pythons. During the past ten years, that focus on retics and ball pythons has brought myriad color morphs and combinations to the NERD collection, many of which were first bred at his facility.

BrianPotter: Im here for comic relief only....I know nothing

PHFaust: Brian Potter first got heavily involved with reptiles while still a US Marine! While still a Marine, Brian began hanging out at Reptile Haven in California and was bitten by the herp bug. Seeing some similarity in running the Chicago Reptile House (with Co-Owner Jeff Lodico)and the marine corps, he made his dream reality. Brian is a well known name to all Chicagoland herpers for his store. It is the "IT" place for area enthusiasts. Now Brian is known nationally for being one of the organizers of the NARBC shows.

PHFaust: Brian Barczyk started breeding reptiles when he was fifteen years old. He started with cornsnakes, and then Burmese Pythons. In 1989 he became a full time breeder of many species. Brian looks forward to every egg hatching and is excited for what the future holds in this ever expanding hobby.

gingerfish: Do y'all have any tricks for feeding a ball python who will not eat?

BHB: this ones for your kevin

EvilMorphgod: They like small cramped housing when they are nervous

gingerfish: yes she has a cave in her enclosure

EvilMorphgod: they can easily get turned off being in an open area

EvilMorphgod: humidity is also key

gingerfish: i own 19 ball pythons now and i cant get her to eat anything!!!

EvilMorphgod: a dried out snake often has zero interest in feeding

EvilMorphgod: that is a BROAD question with many variables to figure

idaviss: I'd start with a SMALL mouse and tight hiding

EvilMorphgod: am I still trying to answr the first question?

KMS: BHB/Dr.Evil....what recessive morph is most sought after at daytona,tinley ect.? and codom as well?

BHB: i think lavender albinos seem to be one of the most sought after recessives

BrianPotter: that would be Pigpen Coldschlitz's Banana Clown in my lowly and humble opinion

BHB: as far as codoms i think spiders make great combos

SlashingFiend: Price wise, what do you expect Albino Ball Pythons to be in 4-5 years?

EvilMorphgod: $500 ??

BHB: there are too many variables to look that far into the future

EvilMorphgod: I think they will have to stabilize soon...they are so NICE!

SlashingFiend: would they be a good starter morph for bps?

EvilMorphgod: at some point more peole can afford them and we will not be able to meet demand

EvilMorphgod: pastels are a good one

EvilMorphgod: the price on some is soo cheap it is a no brainer

BHB: i agree with kevin that they will continue to be a huge seller as the price stabalizes

loconorc: Kevin, anything to say about your book The Complete Ball Python?

loconorc: I plan on buying it at the next show.

EvilMorphgod: The book is now outdated it makes me CRINGE...

BHB: i havent got past the forward yet

RiseAbove: What is the average amount of time a female will go from breeding to ovulation? And what is the ideal temperature for incubation?

EvilMorphgod: BHB?

EvilMorphgod: speak...woof woof

BHB: ive had females go as much as 6 months from breeding to ovulation and incubation is best from 88 to 90 degrees

EvilMorphgod: agreed

Herp1337: What are some tips on selling your Ball Phytons or other Herps? I don't like the term "sell for less" becuase if I put hard work in time to make a new morph I would not want to under sell my snakes

BrianPotter: Doesnt look like "sell for less" lasts very long?????

EvilMorphgod: I think you may have to hold the line and wait for the right situation

EvilMorphgod: if you don't sell it in a week...don't drop the price..

EvilMorphgod: if you suddenly drop it then it is "bad" for the genral market because the other guy will try to undercut the price and we are on the race to the bottom!

EvilMorphgod: Clink!

EmberBall: Do you guys actually spray off the Ball Pythons, or just have a humidity system? What makes the YB so special? Any other YB's in hiding, others like the yb?

EvilMorphgod: BHB?

EvilMorphgod: I generally dump water dishes and occasionally spray when nothing is doing anything....

EvilMorphgod: no mist systems at all

EvilMorphgod: i now run humidifiers and move air and replace it

BHB: i do spray my ball pythons a couple times a week to help with humidity and as far as yb what makes them so special are the super stripers and the ivorys and who knows what else they might produce in the future

EvilMorphgod: YB..

EvilMorphgod: Yes, we have some new stuff with that

EmberBall: I mean is there a hidden gene, in the yb?

EmberBall: it just seems to do cool things to existing morphs

BHB: i think there are many hidden genes in yb

EvilMorphgod: It has potential for sure...but not quite as much as I was thinking

BrianPotter: lets not start the hidden gene thing.....it get GUNS all worked up

BHB: i agree with kevin i was disappointed in some of my offspring

EvilMorphgod: I don't know if there is a hidden gene there..

EvilMorphgod: I think the gene causes things to react...
rough_necked: BHB when is your site due to launch and do you have a storefront that you sell from? or do you offer tours?

JLokay: Kevin and Brian, witht he amount of snakes you guys have, how often do you do cleaning? And how often do you change water bowls? And Brain, any updated pics of the super lori?

BHB: we clean every week and do waters at least once a week

EvilMorphgod: I have no idea how many snakes i have but brian has MORE!

BHB: as for the superlori im working on updated pics and yes its still alive and breeding well

BrianPotter: tell them about the sucking noise at BHB Kevy!

JLokay: how many snakes to be exact Kevin

EvilMorphgod: Clean once a week as a rule....water changes once a week for sure!!!!

BrianPotter: when like 12,000 balls break through the egg at BHB all you hear is sucking noises

EvilMorphgod: Brain knows the deal.... when you have this many it is almost a weight!

gr8nalz_nr: have u had any experience with IBD in pythons. i asked local vet and he didnt even know what it was

EvilMorphgod: responsibility!

EvilMorphgod: I have seen it and it = DEAD snake!

EvilMorphgod: Bad, bad....

gr8nalz_nr: does it happen at young age, or later?

BHB: normally pythons wont live very long with IBD its much more common for boas to have the problem

EvilMorphgod: many vets have no idea what "it' is..

gr8nalz_nr: no kidding.........lol

EvilMorphgod: it can actually be a number of things taht all equal the same symptoms

gr8nalz_nr: i had to tell him for god's sake

EvilMorphgod: I think a healthy boa can carry it...never have a problem but cross contaminate a python and kill it FAST!!!

gr8nalz_nr: so what in your opinion can cause this? just a retrovirus, or mite infestation?

EvilMorphgod: Mites = IBD carriers!!!!

RstysBallsCA_nr: What new combos are you most looking forward to producing in the coming season/years?

BHB: hey rusty

EvilMorphgod: Stress can bring it out...mites can cross contaminate and create nightmares... many things

EvilMorphgod: a carrier animal can be the plague if you are not careful...add some mites and you speed it along

BHB: there are so many cool things coming up its hard to really think about only one mutation

imridethelghtng: what is going on with the paragon any news that was one of my favorite morphs when i saw it i was praying it would prove out simple recessive but some low life stole it just wondering if you all have any leads i think it will be a popular morph if you guys get it back also whats going on with the green head ball havent heard anything on that in awhile P.S i love kevins music razors edge favorite song on the album i need another cd though my brother wants one now im waiting on second cd to come out also was nice talking to you on the phone earlier today kevin hi tracy and kara also for the person who asked about kevins book i highly recomend it im a truck driver keep a copy in the truck with me cant wait for new verison in english since i dont read german

BHB: ive heard there have been babies produced in eurpope

EvilMorphgod: soak in shallow clean water on a heating pad to hydrate and get the snake going

EvilMorphgod: you can leave it like that for a week..

loconorc: what about feeding?

EvilMorphgod: shallow water...and warm...90F

loconorc: should i ask them to let me watch it eat?

EvilMorphgod: small meals first...

EvilMorphgod: if it won't eat...don't wait too long

loconorc: and theyre adults

EvilMorphgod: after a week or tow..

EvilMorphgod: assist feed it a very wet and soggy mouse

loconorc: its a pair of adults, 1.1

loconorc: why wet and soggy?

EvilMorphgod: this will help start the metabolism...a few times (once or twice a wee) like taht should REALLY help it out

loconorc: hm ok

loconorc: will do

EvilMorphgod: if all is right it may start feeding after that!

loconorc: and they have WAY too much heat there

EvilMorphgod: wet and sooggy...means

loconorc: they have 3 big basking lamps

EvilMorphgod: it will slide down its throat easily

EvilMorphgod: a dry mouse will be hard to put down its throat and can tear the delicate tissue!!

BHB: i really respect anybody that will put their time into breeding snakes whether they have a large or small collection

KanesKreatures: Kevin In your working with Woma's hidden gene, do you know if the hidden gene is also carried by the normal clutchmates?

EvilMorphgod: Yes...I think so..... I have a spider that was made in one of those clutches...I bred it to a woma and made pearls...

EvilMorphgod: ???I do not understand or know why!!!!!

EvilMorphgod: scrubs...I forgot..

KanesKreatures: Is it just your woma's?

EvilMorphgod: the hidden woma gene is AWESOME!!!!!!

EvilMorphgod: You'll see!

EvilMorphgod: woma and it reacts with the lesser platty gene i have...

EvilMorphgod: so far those are the two real hidden gene carriers i see....

BHB: we bred a nerd line woma to a platty and didnt get the hidden gene

BHB: i was pretty bummed

EvilMorphgod: That is becasue i have the hidden gene carriers here... I have ALL of them I believe!

KanesKreatures: Is there any traits that the normal sib show?

EvilMorphgod: By mistake it seems.... i tried to sell them but no one wanted them! :)

EvilMorphgod: the normals appear normal.

Finnigan: What are your thoughts on hybrid breedings, such as blood-balls and angolan-balls, particularly in terms of the ethical issues of breeding non-geographically similar species. And, similarly, what are your thoughts on breeding animals that appear to have genetic faults rather than mutations. For example, the Derma ball which is virtually scale-less and missing heat pits.

BHB: i think that although im not a big hybrid guy i think theres nothing wrong with it

EvilMorphgod: I am SATAN so I am EVIL and like hybrids..

Finnigan: kind of a "army of flying monkeys" thinkg I guess...

BHB: as far as the derma goes as long as it can make a healthy snake i dont have a problem with it but it needs to be proven that its healthy before marketing it

EvilMorphgod: i love my snakes so much i am always playing around with them and

EvilMorphgod: making hybrids is very cool to me..

BHB: i think the coma is one of the most interesting hybrids i have seen

EvilMorphgod: as far as the derma ball...I have NEVER seen it in person but i would love to see and breed soemthing like that if I had the chance...

blowitch: Kev, why do you still insist on charging a "tour" price to see store merchandise? I've never seen this done before, any thoughts from the other guys? Denied the opportunity to see new, amazing animals, but never paying for the chance to view common morphs. it's kind of disapointing...but you have AWESOME fish. Also, is the new book going to be more than a prettier print-out of your website? Thanks.

BHB: what type of lucy is it?

chris_nr: my 9 month old ball was off her food for 4 months and only started eating again around xmas. I gave her her 1st small adult mouse 10 days ago and shes only came out of her hide once (to my knowledge) to drink. She has done a partial shed but looks very out of sorts and is quite wrinkly. Should i take her to a vet?

BHB: a 9 month old ball can go along time without food as long as its not looking like its sick i wouldnt worry too much

BHB: but keep an eye on it and if it develops any kind of respitory take it to a vet

idaviss: I have a female spider and a female pinstripe. I was thinking of purchasing a recessive male to breed with them. I haven't seen a good pic of the albino pinstripe; the albino spider ROCKS!! I do have a "nice" male pastel, but would like to add a recessive to the mix. What would you suggest for an '08 spider/pinstripe recessive combo? On a side note does anyone ship Fed-Ex what kind of problems have occured during shipping. Also how frequeny do problems occur?

bplover_nr: Is it true that creating all these different mutations in snake to get certain patterns or colors could cause an ill effect down the line. Like to bring out a certain mutation in a snake can cause a mutation that we might not want in a snake. Is it possible to over mutate that can maybe cause the lifespan of a snake to be shorten or something else that we dont want?

EvilMorphgod:I don't think mutation will do all fo taht ...just a paint job

BHB: although all recesives concentrate we really havent seen any ill effects in most of the snakes we've been breeding

BHB: in some cases we will see some kinking or other problems but in time we'll hopefully be able to breed these things out by adding new gene pool
